A high level government taskforce assigned to review the enlistment of the country’s indigenous nationalities has put 85 nationalities in the ‘indigenous’ list. Mothers for water treatment

Until a year ago, the Jagaruk Mahila Bikash Samuha, a 49-member group of mothers living in the old Newari settlement of Chhusika Tole, one kilometre-east of Patan Durbar Square, had to postpone their monthly meetings by a week because a majority of their active members could not attend as their family members were suffering from one kind of water-borne disease or another.

Victims unaware of domestic violence bill

Chhetris clamour for indigenous status

- A high level taskforce to review the enlistment of the country’s indigenous people will be visiting India next week to study the criteria and standards followed there in the enlistment of indigenous people.
The taskforce was formed in March under the coordination of Dr. Om Gurung.

No respite for domestic helps

- Dinesh Shahi, 12, a grade-five student at a government school in Dhumbarahi, was worried when his teachers scolded him everyday for not attending school regularly. But Shahi couldn’t help it. A domestic help, he had to do all the household chores, such as feed his master’s children and drop them to school. Only then could he finally go to school.

Brahmins, Chhetris join indigenous issue, seek tag

As many as 115 communities, including ‘Hindu elite caste’ Brahmins and Chhetris, are seeking recognition as indigenous communities, the coordinator of a taskforce assigned to update the list of the country’s indigenous peoples said.
